Whirlpool / Kenmore Belt Drive Basket Drive Replacement

This is the basket drive assembly. Its main function is to spin the basket in the spin cycle or stop the tub when the lid is opened or the cycle is done.

This part comes as a complete assembly.

Adjustment

If you have a weak spin cycle you can sometimes adjust this.  Look for either two washers or a adjustment nut at one end of the yoke. For a stronger spin try removing one of the washers or adjust the adjustment nut by turning it to the left.

Noise caused by worn center post bearings cannot be corrected by replacing the basket drive. Special bearing tools are required to remove and install center post bearings. Bearings must be installed by a qualified service technician.

Basket Drive Removal

  1. Disconnect the power
  2. Raise the top and remove the snubber and spring
  3. Remove the tub ring
  4. remove the agitator 
  5. Remove the tub nut, inner tub, and drive block
  6. Lower the top
  7. Remove the gearcase
  8. Remove the basket drive by carefully pulling straight out.
  9. Check the lower seal in the base and make sure it stayed in place when you pulled the basket drive out
  10. When reinstalling lubricate the spin tube bearings with RYKON grease.
  11. Install al in reverse order, run and check.
