| Symptom |
Solution |
| Flame blows away from burners |
- Check air shutters to burners
- Check for draft near burners
- Too much gas to burners
|
| Gas Smell |
- Check all gas valves, thermostatic gas valves and over safety valves for leaks with soap
bubbles
- Check all pipe joints and fittings with soap bubbles
- Check for pilot light out on burners
- Check for too much gas going to burners
|
| Oven burner will not light |
- Check clock for proper settings. Should be set to manual operation
See Picture Below
- Check flame switch (if equipped)
- Check for pilot flame being out
- Check gas pressure
- Check glow igniter (if equipped)
- Check power cord to wall
- Check spark module (if equipped)
- Check thermostat
- For glow bar models, check voltage at safety valve and compare with imprint on valve.
Some models are 2.8 to 3.1 and others are 3.2 to 3.5 volts. The voltage should be printed
on the side or top of the gas valve.
|
| Oven too hot |
- Burner could be getting too much gas
- Pilot light set too high in oven
- Thermostat could be out of calibration
- Oven Safety Valve not shutting off when no voltage to valve or no
call for heat - Replace Safety Valve
|
| Uneven cooking - Food burns on one side, but not done on the other |
- Check burner for partial burning
- Check level of oven
- Check oven door gasket
- Make sure pans are located properly in oven middle

My GAS range oven will not light. The glow bar (igniter) is
glowing, but it will not light..
You either have a bad igniter (glow bar) or a bad safety valve. Yes, the glow bar can be
bad and still glow. It must pull a predetermined amount of current in order for the safety
valve to open. On a tag on the safety valve there should be an AMP or AMPERAGE or CURRENT
rating, usually something like 3.2 amps. This is the amount of amperage that the glow bar
must pull in order to be good. You will need a clamp-on amp meter to test the amperage
draw of the glow bar. Clamp the meter around either of the 2 lead wires at the back of the
glow bar and turn on the thermostat. Observe the amp draw. If it is within 2 percent of
the listed rating on the safety valve, the glow bar is good and you should replace the
safety valve. If the amp rating is not within 2 percent of the listed rating, replace the
glow bar.
Another way to check this is using a voltage meter, check the
voltage to the safety valve.
Some models (round style igniters) are 2.8 to 3.1 and others (flat
style igniters) are 3.2 to 3.5 volts. The voltage should be printed
on the side or top of the gas valve.
Note: I've replaced hundreds of igniters and only
2 oven safety valves in the past 10 years. You can also ohm out the safety
valve. If it ohms good (has continuity) it is ok and you should replace
the igniter. If you have to guess, replace the igniter.
Note : These igniters are made of a material that
is extremely fragile. If you touch the dark gray part of the igniter or
bump it against anything it will break.

Check the Current Draw on the
valve-igniter system using an appropriate current measuring device.
Low current usually means a weak igniter. Do not replace the valve
in low current situations. Replace the igniter.
Another way to do this is using a voltage meter, check the voltage
to the safety valve.
Some models (round style igniters) are 2.8 to 3.1 and others (flat
style igniters) are 3.2 to 3.5 volts. The voltage should be printed
on the side or top of the gas valve. |

the flame switch should have continuity. You can check this using an
ohm meter.

Ignition Module - Check for 110 volts in if 110 in and no output
( no spark or click ) Replace Spark Module
If Maytag Gas Cooking Product or Magic Chef etc and two burners
spark an two do not , suspect Spark Module - Have seen this problem
quite often.
Note : Anytime you turn one of the burners on, ALL OF THEM
SHOULD SPARK. - This is due to the burner ignition switches
are wired in series. This is normal |

Maytag / Admiral Magic Chef / Norge Ranges/ Cooktops have
seen failures in this module - Symptoms - Two burners won't ignite /
spark .
Other two work fine - If so replace module

| Converting a Electronic Ignition Range
to LP
First Step .... Check your Owners Manual to see if your range
requires a orifice kit to convert it. If so follow the instructions
in kit or in owners manual. Some Ranges come from the factory with
the orifices for LP, if so you'll find them in with owners manual.
- Flip cap on regulator or remove cap and flip piece under cap
to LP It should be marked
- Turn gas to each top burner down via burner valve adjustment
nut Turn until yellow tips on burner go away and you have a nice
blue flame
- Remove broiler pan and adjust oven burner via nut on safety
valve - again adjust burner until the the yellow goes away and
you have a nice blue flame.

My GAS STOVE oven will not light. The oven pilot light is lit.
-
Since your oven pilot light will light, your problem will be either the oven thermostat,
pilot assembly or the oven safety valve. Get down and look at the pilot light while you
have someone turn on the oven thermostat. If the thermostat is working properly, you will
see the flame on the pilot light get a little bit bigger when the thermostat is turned on.
If it does get bigger, then the thermostat is working fine. If the flame does not get
bigger on the pilot light when the oven thermostat is turned on, replace the thermostat.
-
Next check to see that it is heating up the safety valve thermocouple hot enough. If not
replace the pilot assembly.
-
If all of that is ok replace the oven safety valve.

| Image Shown - Oven Thermostat in the Off Position or Oven
Thermostat Satisfied. (oven up to temp)
Note : Do Not Take the Safety Valve apart. If you do, you will not be
able to get it to Reseal and it will leak gas.
The Thermocouple comes as part of the Safety Valve and is not
replaceable as a separate component. It is part of the Safety Valve |

| Image Shown - Oven thermostat in the On position and
calling for heat.
Pilot jumps down ( thermostat increases gas to pilot assembly )
heats up thermocouple bulb from safety valve.
Note : Should heat the bulb hot enough to tell safety Valve to let
gas to burner. If not replace the Pilot Assembly
If Pilot jumps upwards or just gets bigger , doesn't shoot down,
replace the Pilot Assembly.
If pilot size does not increase or jump down when turning on oven
thermostat, problem is in thermostat not sending gas to the pilot
assembly or possibly the pilot gas supply tube has a hole in it
somewhere. |
